“Spring Equinox Tour of Los Morteros and Picture Rocks Petroglyphs Archaeological Sites” Tour
March 20, 2021 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
TOUR FILLED – WAITING LIST On March 20, 2021, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, Old Pueblo Archaeology Center presents the “Spring Equinox Tour of Los Morteros and Picture Rocks Petroglyphs Archaeological Sites” with archaeologist Allen Dart. Tour participants will meet at and depart from Silverbell Road and Linda Vista Blvd., Marana, Arizona.
The 2021 spring equinox occurs on March 20 at 2:37 a.m. Mountain Standard Time (9:37 a.m. GMT). To celebrate the vernal equinox, archaeologist Allen Dart (Old Pueblo Archaeology Center’s executive director) leads this tour to Los Morteros, an ancient village site that includes a Hohokam ballcourt and bedrock mortars, and to Picture Rocks, where ancient petroglyphs include a solstice and equinox calendar marker, dancing human-like figures, whimsical animals, and other rock symbols made by Hohokam Indians between 650 and 1450 CE. An equinox calendar petroglyph at the site exhibits a specific interaction with a ray of sunlight on the morning of each equinox regardless of the hour and minute of the actual celestial equinox, so participants in this tour will see that sunlight interaction with the calendar glyph unless clouds block the sunlight.
All participants are asked to wear face masks and to practice physical distancing during the tour to avoid spreading COVID-19 virus.
There is a requested donation of $30 per person and reservations are by 5:00 p.m., March 18. Email info@oldpueblo.org or call 520-798-1201. Donations are due 10 days after reservation request or by 5 p.m. on Thursday, March 18 – whichever is earlier.
