DESCRIPTION:TOUR FULL – WAITING LIST STARTED. On Saturday\, December 9\, 2017\, archaeologist Dr. Aaron M. Wright will guide guests on a tour of Sears Point and Painted Rocks Petroglyphs\, and the Gatlin Hohokam site. The tour group will meet at 10:00 am at Interstate 8\, Exit 78 (Spot Road)\, approximately 39 miles west of Gila Bend\, Arizona. Wright \nTour leader Aaron Wright\, a Preservation Archaeologist with Tucson’s Archaeology Southwest organization\, has research interests in paleoclimatology\, indigenous Southwest ritualism and religion\, and rock art. He will lead us first to see the seemingly countless petroglyphs and geoglyphs (intaglios; ground sculptures) on Sears Point\, the northwestern escarpment of the Sentinel Plain (a vast basaltic field dotted with low shield volcanoes) located along the lower Gila River between Gila Bend and Yuma\, Arizona. Sears Point is renowned for its density of petroglyphs as well as their unique style attributed to the Patayan culture tradition (which is believed to be ancestral to contemporary Yuman- and O’odham-speaking communities). The site is adorned with thousands of petroglyphs\, and several geoglyphs\, and also is traversed by seemingly endless ancient trails. We’ll also get to see remnants of the South Gila Canal (a defunct irrigation venture from the 1880s) at and near Sears Point\, after which we’ll caravan to the Painted Rocks petroglyphs site  northwest of Gila Bend and the Gatlin Platform Mound site on the outskirts of Gila Bend\, touring until around 4:30. Molina was taught the indigenous language\, culture\, and history of the Yoemem (Yaqui Indians) by his maternal grandfather and grandmother\, his grandmother’s cousin\, and several elders from Tucson’s original Pascua Village. A steady stream of Yoeme migrated into southern Arizona to escape the Mexi­can government’s war on and deportations of the Yoeme in the 1890s and early 1900s. DESCRIPTION:Ancient pictographs inside Ventana Cave. \nOn Saturday\, February 18\, 2017 from 6 am to 4 pm\, Old Pueblo Archaeology Center will sponsor a car-caravan educational tour with archaeologist Allen Dart departing from Tucson at the Park & Ride parking lot at I-10 and Ruthrauff Rd. at 6 am (northeast corner of the I-10 westbound Frontage Road at Exit 252) or at 7 a.m. on the east (front) side of the McDonalds Restaurant at 3160 N. Toltec Rd. in Eloy (accessible from I-10 Exit 203). Fee $40 ($32 for Old Pueblo Archaeology Center and Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary members; no charge for members or employees of the Tohono O’odham Nation). Old Pueblo Archaeology Center offers this early-morning car-caravan tour to visit the Ventana Cave National Historic Landmark site and a Native American sacred site on the Tohono O’odham Nation. The Arizona State Museum’s 1940s excavations in Ventana Cave\, led by archaeologists Emil W. Haury and Julian Hayden\, found evidence for human occupation extending from historic times back to around 10\,000 years ago. The cave\, which actually is a very large rockshelter\, also contains pictographs\, petroglyphs\, and other archaeological features used by Native Americans for thousands of years. After visiting the cave we will stop at a Native American petroglyphs site and the “Children’s Shrine\,” a Tohono O’odham sacred site where legend says Tohono O’odham children were offered to the waters to stop a great flood that threatened to engulf the world. Tour leaves Tucson at 6 a.m. to ensure the pictographs can be seen in the best morning light. Archaeologist Allen Dart will lead this car-caravan educational tour to sites in and near Topawa\, Arizona\, departing from Pima Community College\, 401 N. Bonita Ave.\, Tucson on Saturday\, January 7\, 2017. In an educational adventure into Native American culture\, this tour meets in Tucson at 8 a.m. and travels to the Tohono O’odham (Papago) Indian Reservation for visits to the Tohono O’odham Cultural Center & Museum\, the Picture Rock petroglyphs archaeological site\, the historic Baboquivari Camp\, and a Tohono O’odham traditional sacred cave site. We will visit the Cultural Center in Topawa\, Arizona\, from 10 a.m. to 11:30\, then drive 12 miles east toward Baboquivari Peak (the legendary home of the Tohono O’odham Creator deity I’itoi)\, stopping for bring-your-own picnic lunch at Baboquivari Camp\, a historic Civilian Conservation Corps camp site in the oak woodland just below Baboquivari Peak. After lunch we will take a moderate-difficulty\, two-mile-roundtrip\, 1\,000-foot-elevation-difference hike up a trail that leads halfway up the peak\, to visit a cave site traditionally believed to be one of the homes of the deity I’itoi. Finally\, we will visit Picture Rock\, a small butte that contains petroglyphs and pictographs\, bedrock mortars\, and ancient artifacts. Modern Tohono O’odham offerings may be present in some of the visited locations. Artifact collecting is not permitted\, and photos are not allowed in the cave but are OK outside of it. Registrants may either meet the tour group at 8 a.m. Saturday in Tucson and car-caravan onto the reservation\, or may camp in Baboquivari Camp on their own the night before the field trip and meet the tour group at the Cultural Center Saturday morning. Fish in an ancientrock-outlined structure at the Tumamoc Hill archaeological site. \nA massive trinchera (built-up rock terrace) near the crown of Tumamoc Hill. \nOn Saturday\, December 3\, 2016\, Old Pueblo Archaeology Center will host the “Tumamoc Hill Trincheras Site” site tour with archaeologists Dr. Paul R. Fish and Dr. Suzanne K. Fish starting in the courtyard of the Mercado San Agustin\, 100 S. Avenida del Convento\, Tucson. From 9 a.m. to noon: $25 ($20 for Old Pueblo Archaeology Center and Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary members). \nArizona State Museum archaeologists emeriti Paul and Suzy Fish will lead this tour to the archaeological features on Tumamoc Hill\, west of downtown Tucson. In excavations that the Fishes directed on top of this landmark\, flat-topped mountain\, some of the earliest evidence for maize agriculture was found in association with the hilltop’s ca. 2\,000-year-old Native American trincheras features (massive rock-work terraces)\, and rock-foundation houses and living areas were identified to a slightly later period. There are also ca. 1\,000-year-old Hohokam petroglyphs on near the top of Tumamoc Hill. And what a view from the top! SUMMARY:Autumnal Equinox Tour of Los Morteros and Picture Rocks Petroglyphs Archaeological Sites
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Tom Herrick of equinox “sun dagger” on spiral petroglyph at Picture Rocks site\, Pima County\, Arizona. \nOld Pueblo Archaeology Center’s executive director\, archaeologist Allen Dart\, will lead this tour to two of the Tucson area’s premier archaeological sites – Los Morteros and Picture Rocks site\, on Thursday\, September 22\, 2016\, 8 am to noon. Los Morteros\, an ancient village site of the Hohokam\nIndians from about A.D. 850 to 1300\, has been studied by archaeologists and historians for more than a century. During its heyday it was the center of an extended community of related Hohokam sites along the Santa Cruz River. The core of Los Morteros\, which is now preserved in a Pima County natural and cultural resources park\, encompasses a large public architectural feature interpreted as a ballcourt used for ritual and other purposes\, plus many refuse mounds\, room blocks\, hundreds of pithouses\, and thousands of artifacts. Bedrock mortars that inspired the site’s name (Los Morteros is Spanish for “the mortars”) and petroglyphs also are present. The Picture Rocks site\, located in the Tucson Mountains foothills\, contains hundreds of ancient rock symbols created mostly by the Hohokam\, although some of the rock designs may date before A.D. 500. The symbols at Picture Rocks include dancing human-like figures and whimsical animals as well as abstract designs. At least some of the petroglyphs evidently were ritually important\, as evidenced by the observation that at least one of them is a marker for both the equinoxes and the summer solstice. $20 per person ($16 for Old Pueblo Archaeology Center and Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary members) Cancellations made 30 days or more before departure will not be charged. Drive your own vehicle and meet tour in Silver City\, NM. Actual touring begins Friday and continues through Monday. Registered Professional Archaeologist Allen Dart leads this tour to Classic Mimbres and Early Mogollon village archaeological sites\, spectacular petroglyph and pictograph sites\, and museums with probably the finest Mimbres Puebloan pottery collections in the world\, all in southwestern New Mexico’s Silver City\, Mimbres\, Glenwood\, and Deming areas. Places tentatively to be visited include the original Mogollon Village site excavated by archaeologist Emil W. Father Kino brought with him ideas and material culture – chiefly the Christian faith\, the Spanish language\, cattle\, and crops – that would change the region deeply and forever. Join SMRC volunteers in retracing the steps of Kino and the missionaries who followed him. You’ll be guided by scholars and enthusiasts who know and love the region and volunteer their time to share it with others. Along the way you’ll stand in awe before the evocative church ruins of Cocóspera and Átil\, marvel at the mysteries of the spectral paintings on the church walls at Pitiquito\, delight in the exuberance of Magdalena\, take in the simple beauty of Oquitoa\, and bask in the rosy glow on the setting sun as it reflects off the twin towers of Caborca’s mission. You’ll take a side trip into prehistory with a visit to the archaeological site of Trincheras and its new museum. You’ll lunch al fresco near the river at Tubutama and in the shade of quince trees watered by the centuries-old acequia just across from San Ignacio’s church. And at day’s end\, you’ll savor dinner and margaritas on the patio of our host hotel. Best of all\, you’ll have many opportunities to meet the open and friendly people of Sonora whose traditions\, language\, and ethnicity combine the region’s Native and Spanish cultures\, representing the best of both worlds. DESCRIPTION:Photo by Allen Dart of Ventana Cave\, from the inside looking out. \nOld Pueblo Archaeology Center is offering this early-morning carpool tour onto the Tohono O’odham Nation to visit the Ventana Cave National Historic Landmark site on Saturday February 20\, 2016.  During the Arizona State Museum’s 1940s excavations in the cave\, led by archaeologists Emil W. Haury and Julian Hayden\, evidence was found for human occupation going back from historic times to around 10\,000 years ago. The cave\, which actually is a very large rockshelter\, also contains pictographs\, petroglyphs\, and other archaeological features used by Native Americans for thousands of years. Tour leaves Tucson (Pima Community College\, 401 N. Bonita Ave) at 6 a.m. to ensure the pictographs can be seen in the best morning light. Bonita Ave.\, Tucson. Time: 8 a.m.-5 p.m. $40 ($32 for Old Pueblo Archaeology Center and Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary members; no charge for members or employees of the Tohono O’odham Nation). In an educational adventure into Native American culture\, this tour meets in Tucson at 8 a.m. and travels to the Tohono O’odham (Papago) Indian Reservation for visits to the Tohono O’odham Cultural Center & Museum\, the Picture Rock petroglyphs archaeological site\, the historic Baboquivari Camp\, and a Tohono O’odham traditional sacred cave site. We will visit the Cultural Center in Topawa\, Arizona\, from 10 a.m. to 11:30\, then drive 12 miles east toward Baboquivari Peak (the legendary home of the Tohono O’odham Creator diety I’itoi)\, stopping for bring-your-own picnic lunch at Baboquivari Camp\, a historic Civilian Conservation Corps camp site in the oak woodland just below Baboquivari Peak. After lunch we will take a moderate-difficulty\, two-mile-roundtrip\, 1\,000-foot-elevation-difference hike up a trail that leads halfway up the peak\, to visit a cave site traditionally believed to be one of the homes of the diety I’itoi. Finally\, we will visit Picture Rock\, a small butte that contains petroglyphs and pictographs\, bedrock mortars\, and ancient artifacts. Modern Tohono O’odham offerings may be present in some of the visited locations. Artifact collecting is not permitted\, and photos are not allowed in the cave but are OK outside of it. Registrants may either meet the tour group at 8 a.m. Saturday in Tucson and car-caravan onto the reservation\, or may camp in Baboquivari Camp on their own the night before the field trip and meet the tour group at the Cultural Center Saturday morning. Campers must bring their own food and water\, as there are no convenience stores or fast food nearby. Time: 1 p.m. Saturday-1 p.m. or later Sunday; $60 per person ($50 for Old Pueblo Archaeology Center and Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary members) includes all site entry fees but no transportation\, lodging\, or meals. Archaeologist Rich Lange will lead this tour to sites where archaeologist Chuck Adams and Rich are currently excavating and have excavated nearly every summer during the Arizona State Museum’s Homol’ovi Research Program since the mid 1980s. This will be an opportunity to visit two of the large ancestral Hopi villages just outside of Winslow that date to the AD 1300s. We also will visit the spectacular rock art panels at Rock Art Ranch in Chevelon Canyon\, and the Multi-Kiva site\, where excavations being done this summer will just about be wrapping up.
