Staff

Executive Director & Principal Investigator

Allen Dart (B.A., M.A.), Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA), has extensive experience supervising cultural resource projects at Archaic, Hohokam, Patayan, Ancestral Puebloan, Mogollon, protohistoric O'odham (Piman), and historical archaeological sites. He has been employed by the Arizona State Museum (University of Arizona), the Museum of New Mexico, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, and private consulting firms developing archaeology contract and grant proposals, budgets, research designs, National Register nominations, and publications for both professional and avocational archaeologists. An active community volunteer, Mr. Dart has donated his time to other archaeology and history organizations including the Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society, Arizona Archaeological Council, Arizona Archaeological Society, State Historic Preservation Office, and United Way.

Working with Old Pueblo Archaeology Center and volunteering with other organizations Mr. Dart has developed many archaeology projects that have been or will be described and interpreted in publications. Many of them have provided opportunities for public participation and some have resulted in sites being listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the nation’s foremost listing of important heritage sites.

Lead Educational Project Director

Courtney Rose (Ph.D.), is Old Pueblo’s lead instructor for the archaeological field schools, and director of major cultural resource management projects. Dr. Rose received her doctorate in anthropology and a graduate certificate in Latin American studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 2001, for which her dissertation work focused on South American Andean archaeology and changes in social organization among Formative (early village) period societies. Her research interests include the study of ancient households, cultural transitions from mobile existence to village life, and cross-cultural comparison of prehistoric societies. She has directed archaeological research projects in Bolivia and in Arizona Hohokam, Mogollon, Salado, Archaic, protohistoric O’odham, and historical sites, and has worked at Monongahela village sites in Pennsylvania. Dr. Rose has taught courses in archaeology, cultural anthropology, and research methods as an instructor at both the University of Pittsburgh and Tucson’s Pima Community College.

Research Project Director

Arthur C. MacWilliams (Ph.D.), directs major cultural resource management projects for Old Pueblo Archaeology Center. He holds a Bachelor of Science in archaeology (University of Calgary), a Master of Science in quaternary studies (University of Maine), and for his University of Arizona doctoral dissertation research in anthropology he studied the prehistory of the Laguna Bustillos Basin region in central Chihuahua, Mexico. Dr. MacWilliams has an extensive background in archaeology across the southwestern United States in numerous capacities, including project director, and his major research interests include culture history, geoarchaeology, stone artifact technology, petrography, and resource acquisition.

In addition to his work for Old Pueblo, Dr. MacWilliams holds adjunct faculty status in the Department of Archaeology at the University of Calgary, and since 2002 has served as co-principal investigator for the México Norte research project studying early agricultural sites in southern Chihuahua. He actively presents conference papers and publishes research on archaeology of northern Mexico, and his experience includes work in the northern Plains, northern Rocky Mountains, High Arctic, Maine, and southern Brazil.

Laboratory Director and Office Manager

Darla Pettit (A.A.S.), began working for Old Pueblo as a volunteer and was hired in 1995 after being recognized for her organization, skills, and enthusiasm. Having worked on cultural resources survey and excavation projects in Arizona, New Mexico, and France, she has been employed by Old Pueblo as a field crew member and crew chief, educator, program organizer, laboratory director, and office manager.

Ms. Pettit’s especially important contributions to Old Pueblo include helping develop the children’s simulated archaeology dig education program and serving as its first instructor, and managing the field and laboratory instruction, processing, and curation for contracted research projects as well as Old Pueblo’s public archaeological field schools.

Education Instructor

Barbara C. "Cris" Wagner (B.A.) is an education program instructor and tour guide for education programs. She attended archaeological field school at Southern Utah University and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish with an emphasis in Portuguese and anthropology. Mrs. Wagner’s education experience includes working as an education program assistant and curatorial assistant at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, and as a Spanish translator and interpreter.

Bookkeeper/Administrative Assistant

David Davis (B.S.), Certified Purchasing Professional, Certified Professional Purchasing Manager, Certified International Supply Chain Manager, has many years of purchasing and customer service experience. Before joining Old Pueblo’s team he was Buyer/Director of Purchasing for Tree of Life Midwest (Bloomington, Indiana, 1977-1995) and Senior Buyer/Purchasing Manager for Tucson Cooperative Warehouse (1995-2006).
